The origin of “Lunar March the Third”

March 3rd in lunar calendar is the day when people of Zhuang Minority have their GeXu. It’s a grand folksong fair, and is also famous for the name of Gepo Festival.

“GeXu” is a Chinese name, and in Zhuang’s local language, it’s called hawfwen, meaning that people go out to the field and sing songs. In some areas, it’s called fawhlwenx or faengzhaw, meaning that people get out of the caverns and sing. Since Zhuang minority rarely build temples, and their gods are enshrined in the caverns. Caverns are considered as sacred places for local people and they must keep silence in the caverns. People can only sing songs at their wills when they are out of the caverns.

There’s a piece of lyric in Guangxi, saying that all folksongs in Guangxi come from Sanjie Liu herself. It indicates that the origin of Zhuang’s GeXu is closely relevant with the song fairy, Sanjie Liu.

It’s said that Sanjie Liu was born in a fisherman’s home in Yishan, Guangxi, in Tang Dynasty. She loved singing since her childhood, and grew into a beautiful young lady, who could speak through songs. There was a rich man called Huairen Mo, who attempted to marry her by force. Sanjie Liu was strongly against this marriage, but was thrown into a river by Huairen Mo’s servants. Sanjie Liu drifted in the river and was luckily saved at Liuzhou, and she’s been living at the mountain foot of Fish Mountain. Residents nearby heard the news and they all come to Sanjie Liu to learn songs from her. Later, she married a young huntsman, and lived there, teaching songs to local residents. However, when Huairen Mo heard that Sanjie Liu was still alive, he colluded with dark forces in local authorities and have Sanjie Liu and her husband dumped into the Little Dragon Lake by the Fish Mountain. At midnight, under the light of the moon and a few starts, a gentle breeze came when villagers salvaged their bodies. They rode on the back a giant fish and flew up to the sky. Since then, people say that Sanjie Liu has become a fairy in heaven and they called her Song Fairy. In honor of the day that Sanjie Liu became immortal, later generations celebrate the day, lunar March the third, by singing folksongs for three days. It is the origin of GeXu.

According to records, the formation of GeXu has a long history over a thousand years. In the Taiping Huanyu Ji written by someone from Song Dynasty, there are already records saying that Zhuang people dress up and sing songs in a big fair. After Song and Yuan Dynasty, the folksongs in Zhuang minority had a great development and song fairs were often hosted. Until Qing Dynasty, grand GeXus with hundreds and thousands of participants are formulated.

Young people would all dress up during GeXu and gather on the fields, in bamboo forests, or at grass slopes, to sing folksongs at each other. During GeXu, smart and industrious Zhuang people created various folksongs and enriched this traditional holiday with charming music.
